Summer Pet Care Tips

· Animal Team
Summer days can be a lot of fun, but they can also be dangerous for your pets.
Just like us, they're susceptible to heat-related health issues, and they can't always cool themselves down the way we can.
Whether it's a long walk in the park or a trip to the beach, here's how to keep your pet safe during hot weather and ensure they stay happy and healthy.
1. Always Have Fresh Water Available
Hydration is key to keeping your pet cool and healthy in the heat. Just like humans, pets need plenty of water to stay hydrated, especially when it's hot outside. Dehydration can quickly lead to heatstroke, so make sure your pet always has access to fresh, clean water.
Keep a portable water bottle and bowl with you when you're out and about, especially during walks or outdoor activities. This way, you can offer water to your pet even when you're not at home.
2. Avoid Peak Heat Hours
Pets can handle heat, but it's important to know when it's safe to be outside. During the hottest part of the day (usually between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.), the sun is at its peak, and the pavement can become too hot for your pet's paws. It's best to plan walks and outdoor activities in the early morning or later in the evening when temperatures are cooler.
If you must go outside during peak hours, check the pavement with your hand or foot. If it's too hot for you to touch, it's too hot for your pet to walk on.
3. Never Leave Pets in a Hot Car
This one is a no-brainer, but still needs to be emphasized. On a hot day, the inside of a car can quickly reach dangerous temperatures, even with the windows cracked open. Leaving your pet in a car for even a few minutes can be deadly.
If you need to run errands, leave your pet at home. If you must bring them with you, consider using pet-friendly stores or services where pets are allowed inside.
4. Provide Shade and Cool Spaces
Pets need a cool place to relax during the hot weather. Whether it's a shaded area in the yard or a cool spot inside, make sure your pet has somewhere to escape the heat. Air conditioning or fans can make a huge difference in keeping your pet comfortable indoors.
Create a cozy retreat for your pet by placing a cooling mat or damp towel in a shaded area where they can rest. You can also try a cool bath if they're overheating.
5. Watch for Signs of Heatstroke
Heatstroke is a serious condition that can occur quickly, especially in high temperatures. Symptoms include excessive panting, drooling, lethargy, vomiting, or difficulty breathing. If you notice any of these signs, take immediate action to cool your pet down and contact your vet.
If you think your pet is overheating, get them to a cooler place immediately. Offer water, wet their fur with cool (not cold) water, and consult your vet as soon as possible.
Trim Their Coat, but Not Too Short
While it might seem like shaving your pet's coat would help them stay cool, it can actually make things worse. Pets' coats provide insulation from both heat and cold, so trimming can be beneficial, but never shave down to the skin. Instead, opt for a light trim to remove excess hair and prevent mats, which can trap heat.
Regularly brush your pet's coat to remove loose hair and keep their skin cool. If you're unsure about trimming, consult a professional groomer for advice.
Be Mindful of Hot Surfaces
Pets can easily burn their paws on hot surfaces like asphalt, sand, and concrete. To protect their paws, keep them on grass or shaded paths whenever possible. If your pet enjoys walking on the beach, avoid walking them during the hottest parts of the day, when the sand can get scalding hot.
Use paw protection, such as booties or a paw wax that can protect their feet from burns and discomfort. Also, check their paws after walks to make sure they're not injured.
Keeping your pet safe during hot weather is all about taking precautions and being mindful of their needs. With a little preparation, you can help your pet stay cool, hydrated, and comfortable all summer long. By following these simple tips, you can enjoy the warm weather while making sure your furry friend is happy and healthy.
