Where Exactly Is Ushba Peak?
Ushba Peak stands proudly in Svaneti, a remote mountainous region in northwestern Georgia. Specifically, it’s close to the charming village of Mestia, about 15 miles (24 km) away. With its double summits and dramatic rocky silhouette, Ushba dominates the skyline, making it a dream for hikers, photographers, and adventurers like us.
How to Get to Ushba
First, we need to get to Mestia, the gateway to Ushba.
- By plane: We can take a domestic flight from Tbilisi to Mestia Airport (Queen Tamar Airport), which takes about 1 hour.
- By car: Driving from Tbilisi takes about 8–9 hours. The road trip itself is scenic, winding through mountains and valleys.
- By minibus (marshrutka): From Tbilisi, minibuses to Mestia operate daily and cost around $15–$20 USD.
Once in Mestia, getting closer to Ushba usually requires a jeep or an organized trekking tour because the mountain trails are rugged and remote.
Is There an Entrance Fee?
Good news — visiting the area around Ushba Peak is free! There’s no entrance ticket needed for trekking or sightseeing. However, if we hire a local guide or join a trekking tour, costs typically start from $50–$100 USD per person depending on the route and group size.
Best Time to Visit Ushba
The ideal time for visiting is from July to early September.
- During these months, the weather is most stable, with clear skies and warmer temperatures.
- Earlier in the summer (June), snow may still block some trails, and after September, sudden snowfalls make the paths risky.
If we want great photography, early morning and late afternoon offer magical lighting on Ushba’s rocky faces.
What Can We Do Around Ushba?
Even if climbing to the summit is out of reach for most of us, there are fantastic ways to enjoy Ushba’s beauty:

1. Prepare for Altitude: Mestia is already 1,500 meters (4,921 feet) above sea level. Drink plenty of water and take it easy the first day.
2. Dress in Layers: Weather can switch from sunny to stormy within minutes. Light waterproof jackets are a must.
3. Hire a Local Guide: For trekking beyond the easy paths, a local guide ensures safety and enriches the experience with local stories.
4. Cash is King: Credit cards are rarely accepted in small villages. Bring enough Georgian lari (GEL) with us.
5. Respect Nature: Stay on marked trails to protect the fragile alpine ecosystem.
Accommodation and Food Near Ushba
